Eugene Atget Vintage 1899 "librairie Garnier Freres" Paris Albumen Photo For Sale
Photographer: Eugene Atget Title: "Librairie Garnier Freres" Size/Media:Approx. 7" x 8 1/2" Albumen photo Dates:(Shot 1899, Printed 1899)w/ title and negative number in pencil on verso. This image resides in the archive of the La Mediatheque de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine. Amazing and vintage albumen photograph of the Garnier Brothers Bookstore in Paris by Eugene Atget. PLEASE NOTE: This is the last Atget photograph that we have to offer.Atget (1857-1927) was an incredibly important
french photographer who produced an archive of close to 10,000 8x10
glass plate negative images of his city Paris. His documentation of
architecture, gardens, doorknobs, statues and people of Paris was done
as a basically unknown during his lifetime and he made his living by selling prints of his images to locals and to artists who used his
images as models for paintings and by architects for models. He printed
his own albumen prints from the large negatives he shot and gained the
attention of Berenice Abbot who purchased some of his photographs, then
later by Man Ray who published some of his images in a surrealist
magazine even using one for a cover. He gained a little attention
towards the end of his life but died in 1927- Berenice Abbot then
purchased the remains of his archive and negatives with Julian Levy and
put together the 1930 book PHOTOGRAPH DE PARIS- which became a very
important photography history book. His works then became widely
exhibited and in 1968 the collection was purchased by the Museum of
Modern Art. Atget's work is extremely historically important and his
prints are beautiful and collected by museums throughout the world.
The original albumen prints were printed by Atget himself and bear the usual title and negative number in pencil on the verso. Condition: Some fading with warm tones and slightly uneven coloration. Slightly uneven edges. Small bends and creases along edges and in corners, with dings, bends and imperfections throughout (most notable creases in the upper right corner and the lower left edge).
