Exceptional Rare Georgian Gold Navette Sepia Painted Love Pendant Not Mourning

On offer is this fabulous Georgian gold love token - sweetheart pendant, dating to circa 1780. It is set within its original, 12k gold navette shaped mount and crystal bezel. The hand painted sepia scene depicts a young amorous gentleman, presenting his flaming heart on the altar of love. The altar has the initials of the recipient or those of the giver, I have been able to make out H.J or H.F (but maybe you will have better understanding of the script!) The sepia is painted with ground up hair (as was the custom), almost certainly from the amorous young gentleman, that was intended to be kept by the lucky young lady as a memento of his love.

Now, this pendant is not your run of the mill Georgian gold navette mourning piece - if it were, then a representation of a man rather than a woman is still very rare. However, this pendant was likely made by the same jewellers and artists who produced mourning jewellery. Thus, it still comes under the collective banner of mourning jewellery and art. Any serious collector of mourning jewellery, simply must have space in their collection for such an exquisite jewel!

Sepia painted sweetheart tokens are again very rare, I have only been able to trace a dozen or so (none as good as this) with most having twin hearts on an altar (symbollic of a marriage).

I would simply love to know the story behind this magnificent piece of jewellery (originally a very expensive object to have made) though I suppose that this is part of the allure and romance, in collecting ancient and antique jewellery - we will simply never know! Who ever this young gentlemam was, he must have been aristocracy or else trying impress an aristocratic suitor. He was certainly madly in love with her, represented by the flaming heart (symbolic of burning desire). The pendant has no inscription or dedication, making it suitable to be given again (if one was so inclined) to another beautiful young lady!

I have taken a series of photos, with and without the aid of the flash. This can give you a better feel for the quality of painting and the overall condition. I have been unable to find any serious flaws or damage, save the usual age usuage one would expect with such a rare antique jewel!

Due to the rarity and that very few precedents are known, I have decided to sale it from 0.99p! I know it will find its true value, being priceless to the right owner.
