You are viewing a charming and quite rare signed plaque by the French animal sculptor and medallist Victor Peter (1840-1918). Peter was born in Paris and befriended and studied with Auguste Rodin, among others. In 1901 he was nominated as a professor at the School of Fine Arts (Beaux Arts) in Paris. He received a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition of 1889 and a gold medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. He was known for his animal compositions, the lion being one of his most famous icons. I keep thinking of poor old Cecil when I look at it!This plaque was struck in 1928 and measures approximately 2 3\\4 x 3 1\\2 inches. It is in fairly good condition with a nice patina. Some wear, nicks and scratches evident, as well as corrosion spots. I have not attempted to clean the medal at all. Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have.
