This sale is for an exquisite antique Qing Dynasty Chinese jade carving of a fish and lotus. The jade carving is carved with a fish, lotus blossom and lotus on one side and a graceful, large single lotus on the other side. The pendant is deeply carved into the jade and is a lovely size (2 7/16\" x 1 5/8\" x 3/8\"). The old jade is mottled green in color and very cold & smooth to the touch. The carving tested as genuine jadeite using a Presidium Gem Tester (which is non-invasive and does not harm the jade). Many Chinese carvings sold as genuine jade are actually hard stone. So it is nice to know this very fine Chinese carving tested as genuine jadite. From the late Qing dynasty (1880 - 1911) or very early Republic period. A fine Chinese carved scroll wood stand is included in the sale to display the exquisite jade carving. The stand has some age and is high quality. The wood is lovely and the scrolled feet are larger than on many scroll stands. There could be very minor surface scratches but the stand is in excellent pre-owned condition.Carved discs, charms and amulets have been unearthed in Chinese tombs that date back at least 3000 years. The exact original use is not documented. It is believed the objects were used as amulets or charms to ward off evil and bring good fortune to the owner. They were sometimes worn as pendants or on clothing in later times.
The lotus is a sacred Buddhist symbol and also symbolizes purity and harmony. The fish symbolizes abundance and good fortune. When shown together in Chinese art, the fish and lotus symbolize a wish for happiness year after year.
The jade carving of this pendant required great skill and time by a highly experienced Chinese artisan. I can find no damage (chips, cracks, repairs). There could be minor surface scratches from being antique. The carving is in excellent antique condition.
