I have just returned from my most recent buying trip to France! Once again I managed to truffle out some delightful items for you to browse through, and I will be listing these as I retrieve them from their boxes. South West France was rather cold and rainy this May – not what I had been expecting at all! Nevertheless, the wonderful brocantes and antique markets proved to be a fabulous hunting ground, and my contacts had stored away boxes of brilliant antique textiles and ephemera for me to sort through. Do keep a look out over the next weeks as I sort through the treasures and list them for you!

Here is an astonishing story for you: In the 1880s, two sisters were born into a wealthy, aristocratic family, living in a manor house near Carcassonne in SW France. Their parents died before the sisters reached their majority. Both sisters were convent-educated, and in the 1890s, the older sister decided to join the order, and became a nun. She devoted the rest of her life to religious contemplation and fine embroidery. The other sister did not marry, and lived in the manor house on her own until she died in the 1970s. The house was then closed up, as there was no family to inherit, and it remained untouched until last year, when a contact of mine was asked to clear it. When I asked if he had any interesting textile items for me, he produced a trunk from this house, full of the most exquisitely embroidered pieces. Each item was wrapped in a large silk handkerchief. I am listing three items from the trunk this week.

This is an exquisite, hand embroidered white-work shawl - the fine lawn fabric is as light as a butterfly's wing - it must have been a work of painstaking dedication to hand embroider this beautiful shawl! Beautiful wreaths or coronets of flowers - although the embroidery is akin to crewel work, the drawn thread work of the flower centres is very similar to Ayrshire whitework. Thus would make a stunning wedding shawl. worn over a strapless wedding dress. The shawl is now snowy white, with no marks or stains. Amazingly, for such a fine, delicate item, there is almost no damage at all - just a couple of tiny pinhead sized holes and some immaculate original darns (so fine they are almost invisible - they are works of art in themselves and in no way detract from the beauty of the shawl) The shawl measures 275cm along the top edge, and 130cm from the top to the bottom of the point at the back. A stunning heirloom piece with a story attached!
