Fab Arts & Crafts Vaseline Glass Lantern Light Shade & Fitting Was Benson ?:
Height (Shade & Fitting) : 27 cms
Shade height : 16 cms
Width of fitting : 13.5 cms
This stunning lantern / light has a striped, ‘hour-glass’ shaped, Vaseline (blown), glass shade, and is complete with its’ Arts & Crafts, heavy-gauge, brass fitting. This has the holder for an electric light bulb, and a hanging loop at the top. The shade has an everted rim, which supports the (detatchable), fitting with the aid of three screws, (original), and the bottom of the shade is closed with a pinched knop. The uranium glass gives a wonderful glow of pinkish light when lit.
The fitting consists of six leaf-like lobes, each of which is curved, and curled at the edges. This is very similar to metalwork by WAS Benson. It is marked with the Registered Number ‘365585’, and, although I cannot find this actual design in the ‘Benson Book’, the registered numbers of his designs, recorded there, include the numbers 361826/366639, these being dated 1900.
Offered in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, chips or repairs. There is an air bubble, (unbroken), within the glass, and pinch-marks around the waist of the knop, as manufactured.
A wonderful, original and fully functional example of early electric lighting, which would enhance any Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau interior. It would display well with work by such as Newlyn, Pearson, Guild of Handicraft or other contemporary items retailed by Liberty & Co. at the turn of the last century, such a Tudric Pewter / Cymric Silver.
Will be carefully and lovingly packed!
