Fabulous 19c Chinese Deeply Carved Hardwood Book Slide Stand W Fabulous Details For SaleFor your consideration we have here a rare example of a 19c Chinese finely carved hardwood book slide or stand that opens up to a 24" length. This fabulous book slide was produced in Canton, China during the 'Old China Trade' era sometime around the c1850s to the c1870s and because this is the first one of its type that I have ever seen in the Cantonese style that this could have been a special order from a ship's captain while at Canton. It is much like the English produced book slides but contains some of the very finest carving I have seen on any box, case or other Canton worked items. Both ends are hinged to lay flat or in the up position when holding books or other items and on the outside of each show carving in super deep relief of figures firing guns, eating at tables while showing tiny leafed plants growing up in the background. There are an array of objects showing both indoor and outdoor settings with well defined tables, garden seats, trees, plants as well as mountains, planters, rockery and roofedporcheseven the floors of both ends show intricate workmanship. There are also anamalgamof geometric designs and patterns with each side having a pierced reserve of a long tailed bird amoungstfoliage. The inside of both ends and the base are done in the very finest scrolling, plants and two happiness symbols with exactprecisionand sharp edge lines and the side edges of the base has a continuous key design over top a single leaf pattern and ruyi designed corners. The condition overall is excellent with no real flaws at all just minor surface wear and a couple of small age cracks at the ends along with one end having a bit of a rise in the center of the base just below the upright end but causes no problems. Sizes: Length 15" x Width 6" x Height 8" x Total length when extended 24". A wonderful addition to any Asian or antique desk related items or simply a great object to display.
