Fabulous 19c Chinese Export Gilt Lacquer Tea Caddy With Almost No Lacquer Wear For Sale
For your consideration we have here a fabulous 19c Chinese export gold gilt tea caddy containing double pewter canisters standing on four carved winged paw feet. This caddy was produced in Canton, China during the 'Old China Trade' era around c1870 and exported to the West. This tea caddy is simply gorgeous being of the Bombayoctagonalshape with the gold gilt lacquer being a bit of a deeper gold coloring than most I have seen and owned still having two shades of gold on a black/brown ground saturated with various designs of flowers, moths/butterflies and symbols in shaped reserves with both solid gold and pin dot backgrounds as well as other shaped reserves containing outdoor and garden settings depicting numerous figures in relaxed conversations and the drinking of tea. The inside is finished in the traditional high sheen black lacquer containing two pewter canisters complete with covers and inner lids with turned pulls with each top surface being engraved with floral and geometric designs. The caddy stands on four carved wooden winged feet also covered in gold gilting with attached felt pads and the underneath is again treated with a high sheen black lacquer. Condition is excellent with the lacquer being almost perfect which is hardly ever seen but there is a small amount of rubbing just to the top ridges and corner tips from handling and one center end panel on the lid's left side has just a small amount of rubbing where the hand was used to lift the lid and even the pewter canisters are in great condition with no dents or splits only light wear from age and handling through out its 140 year or so life span. Sizes: Width 8" x Depth 5-1/2" x Height 5-1/4". A splendid Cantonese lacquer caddy in fabulous condition for the collector or for that special place in the home or office.
