Outstanding ornate silverplated spooner with bold figural handles and parcel gilt interior. This striking piece dates from the mid to late 1800’s and was made by the Middletown Plate Co. of Middletown, Connecticut. The spooner’s design features acanthus leaves and scrollwork and in addition to the two heads on the handles, has eight more masks with helmeted faces. There is a heart shaped cartouche on either side with a monogram T engraved on one side only. This spoon holder stands 6” (15.2 cm) tall, and measures 6 1/8” (15.5 cm) wide measured handle to handle.
This great old spooner is in very good condition, with no dents, breaks, or repairs, and only minor wear to the silver plating. The wear can be seen around the edges of the chased design and within the monogrammed cartouche area. There are many small scratches and tiny gouges on the spooner, and the vacant cartouche has a small pitted worn spot within it. There are scratches on the inner top rim area, as well as utensil scratches on the inner floor. The parcel gilt interior has worn some over the years and it is a paler gold near the top sections.
