EAGLE SHIELD PATTERN LAW ENFORCEMENT

This is a genuine Antique Deputy Sheriff badge in the very desirable Eagle shield pattern. The shield pattern is one of the earliest shapes in badges, and was highly popular in the early West. Many Texas badges were shields rather than stars. At least during the 1880\'s the Eagle top shield badges were intended for use by the larger Law Enforcement Agencies. In the Old West, many Sheriffs were elected officials who many times had little law enforcement experience, and rarely ventured beyond administrative duties; leaving the true enforcement duties to their deputies, including assignments such as a posses or manhunts for criminals. It should be remembered that a Sheriff is a County official; and although they were stationed in a city or town, they were not considered Sheriff of that city which in all likelihood had it\'s own police force or City Marshall. This badge is nickel plated 3 dimensional cast brass. The front has some light wear at the top of the A293 panel that shows the base metal as brass, and the lettering is filled in with black paint. This is a medium size working badge, about 2 1/2\" tall x 1 3/4\" across, weighs .9 oz., dates to the 1930\'s, and was issued in Columbus, OH. The catch for the pin on the back is a \"fork\" or \"thumbnail\" style that was used as early as 1850 to the 1940\'s. The patent date on the pin base is the Farnham\'s patent of 1937. The back of the badge shows the 3D casting details, with light aged patina. Fine condition overall. This would be perfect for any Lawman, Sheriff, Constable, Deputy, Police Badge, Old West, Western Americana collector, display, conversation piece or desk accessory.
