Fine Large Old Northwest Coast Kwakiutl Indian Cedar Totem Pole George Nelson

A fine large old Northwest CoastKwakiutl hand carved and painted cedar totem pole dating from the early to mid 1900's. The totem depicts a Thunderbird standing over a bear devouring a salmon. Expertly painted in great bright vibrant tradition Kwakiutl pigments of red, green and black. Though the totem is unsigned it is attributed to the hand of a Quatsino sound carver by the name of George Nelson who had a distinct ornate carving style. Most known for carving the famous sea lion house post in 1900 which are now on display at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. A example of his work is illustrated in Book Carvings and Commerce Model totem poles 1880-2010 by Michael Hall and Pat Glascock on page 111. The totem stands 16" tall with a 10" wingspan, base measures 3 3/4" x 3" square and is in fine condition, the wings are slotted in and can be removed easily for safe shipping.
