Fine Old Northwest Coast Haida Argillite Totem C1900 Paul Jones For Sale

This offering is for a very fine old museum quality hand carved Northwest Coast Haida genuine argillite totemcirca 1900-1910. The totem features wonderful Haida imageryof a bear with hands wrapped around its knees, and a Killer whale below. I really like the human like transformation qualities of the seated bear and how hegrasps his knees in a very human like way. Though the totem is unsigned it is attributed to the hand of either Paul Jones ( 1847-1929) or his brother Moses Jones (1840's-1926). Though hard to distinguish between the works from one another, their work on its own with its distinct with its sharp down slanted eyes, long fingered hands and feet that are orientated in opposing directions, and natural realistic lips make their work easily identifiable. See Barbeau - Haida Carvers in Argillite pages 110-117 for a chapter devoted to the brothers. I believe this is a fairly early work of the carver as its quite substantial (thick and wide) in execution and the secondary cross hatched details are extremely fine and precise. The totem stands 6 1/2" tall on a base measuring 2" x 2" square and is invery goodconditionwith no damagenoted only some minor flea bite sized nicks, and the occ scratchnoted which is typical of age and handling. The totem is fully guaranteed to be 100 % real argillite, hand carvedand old . Argillite is the slate black rock that is only found in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia and all known reserves are the sole and closely guarded property of the Haida tribe. This museum quality totem will make agreat display item and a fine addition to anyone's collection .Real argillite totems are rare and this one is one of two that we have currently offered. Please add $9.95 for careful shipping and insurance (USA). Good Luck and Happy offerding.
