Set of 4 Antique Handmade BOSA Sardinia FIGURAL LACE Placemats DEER DOGS

Description: I offer here a set of FOUR very old linen placemats with delightful handmade Bosa (Sardinia) filet lace around the edges. Theymeasure approximately 10.5\" X 17\" and feature a line of large dogs chasing small deer top and bottom. The lace on the ends features an animal with a humped back like a camel, yet with long antlers! (Enlarge photos #4 and #5.) The linen fabric is heavy-medium weight, an unbleached cream-color, and the color varies slightly.I carefully hand-laundered and blocked these for you with no bleach and no starch. I find no damage of any consequence. I offer these mats primarily as lace for the collector. They could be used at table, however I suggest you serve no red wine or tomato sauce, and keep them away from candle wax and grease. I believe they are heirlooms and should be conserved and protected.
Note about condition: Please enlarge my photos to examine the edges of these placemats. The top and bottom edges are bound with a substantial buttonhole stitch with picots. The side edges are unbound and had areas with a few broken threads. I have very carefully mended these lightly shabby edges They are now sturdy and none the worse for wear. (See in photos #6, #7, #8) If you love very old hand-knotted, hand-darned filet lace with zoomorphic patterns, here are wonderful examples for you. I have three more of these fine filet mats in a separate sale and am offering them as singles, for those who would like just one for their collection.

A Brief Lace Tutorial

HAND-KNOTTED FILET LACE:To distinguish filet lace from other netted laces ( such as Buratto, which is very different), look closely at the mesh. You will see that only a single thread is used horizontally and a single thread is used vertically to form the mesh. Each corner of the mesh on this fine filet lace is knotted by hand! After the mesh is constructed the lace-maker \"darns\" or weaves in her pattern.
