The Civil War Library and Museum commissioned a collection of (12) different collector knives honoring Civil War Officers of the Union and the Confederate States. The series includes (4) Union Officers, including General U.S. Grant, and (8) Confederate Officers, including General Robert E. Lee. Each knife features on the front of the handle, a full color portrait of a famous officer. Each Officer is shown in a portrait which portrays them in a typical historical background. Inlaid into the back of the handle of each knife is the Collector Seal of The Franklin Mint. The handles of the Union Officers\' knives are finely sculptured in a finish that closely resembles the look and feel of dark blue colored porcelain. The handles of the Confederate Officers\' knives are sculptured and colored to capture the classic look and feel of fine pewter. The top of the Union Officers\' knife handles have an American Flag framed in a raised gold border, and the Confederate Officers\' knives have a Confederate Flag, also framed by a raised gold border. The portraits of the Officers on each knife are framed by a raised gold border. Above and below each framed portrait on each knife, is a blue band containing a series of small white stars, outlined by bands of blue or silver. The lower bolster of each knife is finished to resemble a silver mesh pattern, ending in a silver pommel. The pommel of each knife bears a mounted gold medallion containing the initials \"US\" for the Union States, and \"CS\" for the Confederate States. Each of the knives has a single stainless steel blade, which is etched with a reference to an historical feature related to the Officer represented in the handle portrait.

The knives were originally sold by The Franklin Mint. They were produced in limited quantity, and sold for $37.50 each. They are indicative of the finely crafted, high quality products sold by this company.
