RICHARDSON'S
MONITOR OF FREE-MASONRY
The purpose of this book was written as Mr. Richardson was retiring from the Society. The Society of Free Masons was formed at an early age of the world, when there were no laws to protect the weak against the strong. The oaths and obligations were then undoubtedly blinding, not only for the protections of the members, but for the preservation of the very imperfect arts and sciences of that period. It is party to gratify the spirit of inquisitiveness that this book was written, and partly to give information for Free Masons themselves.
The completion of this book was comming off the heelsthirty fiveyears later, after WILLIAM MORGAN wrote his famous book revealing the mysteries of modern Free Masonry, and giving to the outside world a particular description of the ceremonies observed in the Lodges of the first six or seven degrees. This created such an indignation amongst the Masonic community in western New York. The end result left a negative shadow upon Freemasonry which lasted many years. But there must be an end to all things; and in the fulness of time the prejudice against Free Masonry died away.
In the following pages, the author endeavors to give exact descriptionsof the Masonic ceremonies as the are (or should be) performed in the Lodges, Chapters, & of each degree who desire a printed guide to facilitate their work.
It furnishes, in a single volume, details of MASONIC RITUALS.It reveals and explainsthe signs, tokens, and grips used by Masons in theirceremonies. The duegard signs, oaths, the illusions,SECRET HANDSHAKES, regalia, PASS-WORDS, sacred words and HIEROGLYPHICS are all here! It gives the entire initiation process for thethree degrees, from beginningtoend, with the story behind each degree and all the signs and gestures relating to it. In short, it is a Practical Guide to the Ceremonies of all the Degrees conferred in Masonic Lodges, Chapters andEncampments.
The numerous engravings which adorn this work bear testimony to the earnest desire of the Publishers to spare no effort or expense necessary to the production of a book which should prove in every way satisfactory to those interested in the subject treated. There areLOTS OFILLUSTRATIONS!!! which show important details of the rituals, including gestures, tools, and symbolic pictures. The illustrations are so numerous thattheymay givethe lay reader an invalid impression thathe finally knows all about the secrets of Masonry. Therefore, for non-masons who are simply curious about Freemasonry, there is a lot here to entertain the eye and bedazzle the mind.
There is no Society so widely known, and yet really so little known, as that of the Masons. Even many of the members of that Ancient and Honorable Fraternity are strangely uninformed respecting its eventful past.Dealing critically and impartially with the traditions, customs, records, degrees andceremonies of theBrotherhood, this manual contains the actualrites of the Craft, extending over a period of someseven centuries, and that of its grand structures. Myth here gives up its underlying truth. Masons will find this an indispensable tool to bone up on their degree work, and non-Masons will find it simple, informative, and it may even inspire them to petition a lodge and experience the real thing.
