French High Ranking Officer's Epee Sword Of Exceptional Quality & Decoration:
A truly superb example of the French Officer's Epee of the model of 1872, by Coulaux. The sword itself is of exceptional quality, with a finer quality of manufacture than any other example of this particular model than I have seen. It is more heavily decorated, and the decoration is better executed than any other example of which I am aware. The wreath of laurels and Flags is a heavy, separately attached piece with beautiful detail. Likewise, the sword itself is nearly mint. There is some slight lessening of the gilt, and very slight finger print clouding to the blade, but it is in original polish, with the overwhelming majority of its original luster. Even the wire binding to the polished walnut grip is fanier than usual- it is a band of embossed wire that is bright as new. Additionally, although the blade is that of a standard "small sword," it is stouter and stronger than the usual for this style- it would make an excellent killing blade were it called upon to do so. The blade is marked Coulaux on the ricasso, with an oval with the letter "H" with a star overhead.
The scabbard is missing its bottom foot or so, including the drag. There is also some leather missing from the reverse of the scabbard. The top of the scabbard retains its throat, which is also more ornate than normal.
The sword is 36 inches long overall. The blade is 30 inches.
Despite the missing part of the scabbard, I am confident that you will never find a nicer example of this particular sword. It epitomizes the art of the French sword.
