Fabulous 18th century Georgian 18k Gold Intaglio Ring Apollo & Daphne Size 9 3/4:

This is a superb Georgian 18k gold intaglio ring, dating to the 18th century A.D. The ring is set with a magnificent hardstone intaglio, with a scene depicting Apollo lamentingthe loss of Daphne changed into a laurel tree. The quality of the cutting is perfect, with finely detailed facial features and anatomy. Such artistic quality was known in ancient Greece, found on Hellenistic gems. This example we feel is more Georgian and a work by one of the more famous gemarii. It is set in a large and heavy solid gold finger ring, is not hallmarked but tests at 18K. It would have been the type of object acquired by the gentry on their Grand Tour, to demonstrate learning and knowledge of classical antiquity. The ring is in excellent condition and can be worn again today.
