This is a lovely antique penwork box signed with the initials JC, and the date 1800. Hand painted scrolls and flowers on the sliding top and sides. The central motif is of a lion and three cherubs , or putti. One is holding a laurel wreath, perhaps for victory. The center cherub has a quiver, and what appears to be a tree branch. The cherub on the right is holding a cornucopia with various items, indicating prosperity.A design of small dots cover the top edge. Inside, the box has its original lock, and small compartments, perhaps for writing supplies. The interior is covered in red leather, or paper textured to give that effect. On the underneath of the sliding cover are the initials and date in old ink mentioned above. JC 1800.Condition: Varnish is somewhat alligatored, but could be restored. Bottom has an ink stain along one edge. Does not have a key.
