Fabulous Fancy Dome Top Victorian Steamer Trunk Antique Chest W/interior & Tray For Sale
Gorgeous Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Lots Of Fancy Hardware, Interior Compartment Area, and Interior Tray
This is definitely the nicest dome top trunk that we have had in a couple of years. This one is absolutely beautiful and has a tremendous amount of fancy hardware on it. This wonderful dome top should date back to the late 1800's. Here are the dimensions:from left to right across the front is 30 inches, from floor to top is approximately 25 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 17 1/2 inches. The trunk is made up of pine base wood, oak or ash outer slat boards, and the dome top is made up of early ply. The wood has been lightly sanded and finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood has a nice color. It is in pretty good condition considering how old this trunk is. There are some typical stress cracks, some of which are running across the top on the dome and some are at the base of the trunk. Nearly all of the trunks that we refinish have stress cracks and distress marks, simply because these trunks are very old and have been kept in places like basements, attics, and barns. A lot of the fancy metal hardware on this fancy trunk is cast iron. Some of the cast iron cap metal has an "S" engraved in the center. This may be the initial for the trunk maker. We are not sure. All we know is that this trunk maker went all out and put crazy amounts of hardware all over this trunk, more so than we have seen on any dome tops for a couple of years now that we have worked on. This trunk was probably purchased back in the 1800's by a wealthy person since it probably cost back then more than your average lesser quality trunks. This one has the original patent dated lock. We have shown a close up picture of the patent date. It reads, "Sept★1887". We have matched up a key as best as we could for this beautiful trunk's lock. It does open and close the lock, although you have to put the key in and pull back a little tiny bit before you turn it to unlock and lock the trunk lock. With some practice, this key should suffice. It is the best we could come up with. Unfortunately over 130 years, the original key generally gets lost. The front latches are original and they do work properly since the springs are intact. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. The metal hardware on this trunk is not brass and all of it has been painted by hand in black and gold leaf. Going to the interior, we have removed the paper lining. It was somewhat worn looking, although we did make sure to leave the nice factory original pictures at the top and the paper border on the underside of the top. This picture on the left hand side under the dome is quite lovely and unusual. It portrays some girls dressed up in Victorian clothing playing around a well water pump. One girl is getting her feet wet while the other girl is trying to fill a water container. The last girl is pumping the pump handle. We have never had such a cute picture involving three children on any of the trunks that we have refinished. We have made a nice divided tray for this trunk that comes with a wooden lid with picture on the left hand side. This picture is a trunk maker's style picture that we have added. The interior wood and tray have received two coats of polyurethane to preserve the wood. The right hand side under the top has a hidden compartment. You can drop the door down and store items up inside this compartment area. Look at the pictures and you will see what we are talking about. This trunk looks very much like a nautical treasure chest. It might look nice on a person's large boat or yacht. If you want to be one up on your neighbors, then you really might consider buying this remarkable one of a kind, nicest dome top trunk on . There is no telling how long it will be before we have another trunk of this stature to work on. Going to the bottom underneath this trunk, it still has the factory original metal casters, one at each corner and they do still spin. The bottom is in decent condition and we finished it to make it nice and clean for your house. Our trunks on have been making wonderful lifetime lasting gifts for loved ones on for about twelve years now. We have sold over 1500 trunks and have almost that many positive responses for trunk sales. Our customers are great and we are happy that they are happy. Buy with confidence and hopefully whoever owns their wonderful trunk will use it for decades into the future and possibly pass it down to future generations.
