Fabulous Jeromes & Darrow 8 Day Wood Works Shelf Clock. For Sale
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE NARRATIVE BEFORE offerDING. Here is a totally restored, from the base up, double decker wood movement shelf or mantle clock made in 1834 by JEROMES & DARROW, Bristol, CT, USA. The very last picture shows the clock as I received it many years ago, and the first picture shows the completed restoration. The very top cornice and the base board were replaced as they were chewed up on the corners so that any attempt at restoration would have looked very bad. These pieces were veneered in a good quality mahogany veneer. The side boards were re-veneered, as well as both doors, in the same wood. The original center piece that holds the small mirror, the columns, and the caps and bases were salvageable and refinished along with the newer pieces. A repainted tablet done by renowned artist and reverse painter Tom Moberg did the lower painting on old glass. An old mirror was located and a piece made for the center. The upper glass was replaced with old glass. Now the movement. It is 8 day, and one of Jerome's last efforts to compete with the newer brass 8 day clocks coming on the market in the middle 1830's. In the time train, there are two short-shaft 30 hour time wheels that sit on a block on the back plate. Jerome was using up old wood movement parts at this time, thus the two odd wheels. They work just fine, and were intended to be used in this movement. The movement has oak plates, and underwent a complete cleaning, with new cords. This movement has the feature of brass bushings, which are just small brass discs drilled to accept the wheel pivot. I replaced most of these with new brass bushings (see last picture for an example, left center) which I made out of brass stock and drilled to fit the pivots and the plates. The movement now runs as intended, and is a good timekeeper. It strikes the hour on a spiral gong. The two weights may or may not be original to this clock, but they power it just fine and are period at least. Finally, the entire case was stained in a natural stain and finished in gloss lacquer and then hand rubbed down to a satin finish, much like today's fine furniture. The dial was repainted by a professional dial painter, and matches the original exactly. The pendulum ball, hands, and door key are new replacements. Winding crank key is old. The ivory escutcheons on the doors came from an old church organ key donor. The case measures 20" wide at the top and 37 1/2" high. Trying to figure the shipping on a clock this size and the weight, I decided to offer it with FREE SHIPPING, to avoid the hassle of endless emails and zip codes trying to figure the cost. Insurance and delivery confirmation will be provided as well. Now, this clock isn't cheap, but quality antiques never are, but it is priced to be well within, or below, what it would reasonably bring in an antique sale or high end shop. Please ask any questions before offerding, and please study all the pictures carefully so that you know exactly what you are getting when it arrives. It will be carefully packed, and the weights sent separately. Small packing fee. Thank you for reading this far, and I hope you like what you see. Continental USA (lower 48 states) shipping only, sorry. Clock will be sold 'as-is'.
