Fabulous Johann Loetz 1905 Silver Overlay Papillion Iridescent Vase/bowl:
This is a truely fabulous, early 20th century, Circa 1905,Art Nouveau, Johann Loetz, Papillion, Silver Overlay, Gold/Blue IridescentVase/Bowl, of footed circular form with tapered body, decorated with stunning silver overlaid shamrocks and whiplash lines, to a gold/blue iridescent papillion ground/base.
The colourand lustre of thisLoetzVase/Bowl istruely superb......It's been a nightmare to photo though ......because it's picking upso much light reflection. It's iridescentcolour, changes depending onroom lighting conditions.
Please also note ...... all the white lines are just light reflection's.
The Loetz Vase/Bowl is in wonderful original condition, no flee bites, or restoration. It does however have a very tiny 4mm glass fracture underit's top rim, as shown in photo 5, which is only clearly visable when held up to a light. This beautiful Loetz piece would normally retail at around £2000..... hence I'm going to start this beautiful Loetz piece at 0.99p and let it find it's own value.
Johann LotzWitwe Klostermuhle
The glass factory was founded in 1836 in Klostermuhle and bought up in 1840 by the smelter Johann Loetz, whose widow ran the works under the name Johann Loetz Widow. The grandson, Max Ritter von Spaun, took over the glass factory in 1879 and completely modernized it.
Johann Loetz Widow was the most significant art glass manufacturer in Bohemia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and enjoyed an international reputation. The firm gained world fame through its Art Nouveau glasses that – following the precedent of Louis C. Tiffany in America – it developed to become an independent and multi-facetted production line. Around the turn of the century when Max von Spaun was achieving great success with glasses with “Phenomenon” décor, the glass works exploited contacts with the Viennese art scene together with the glass retailers E. Bakalowits Söhne, Vienna and J.&L. Lobmeyr, Vienna. The resulting cooperation with artists like Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and his students reached its zenith in the years after 1900. In these years the metallic iridescent glasses were particularly characteristic. Loetzfinally closed down during the Second World War.
