Family Ethel Washington Dolls Alaska Eskimo 2 Dolls & Baby For Sale
Selling together are two Eskimo dolls with a baby tucked into the mom's hood.
The dolls are made by Ethel Washington (1889-1968) from Kotzebue, Alaska. Washington started making her wooden head, soft bodied dolls in the 1930's. Her work is legendary and so meticulous that she could only make a few dolls each year. Her skill and the rarity of the dolls makes them highly collectible today.
Washington used birch wood for the faces of her dolls. She often collected the wood along the Kobok river to whittle and shape into expressive faces. She frequently patterned the dolls features after real people she knew. Human hair or wolverine fur was used for the hair of her dolls. Details to the faces of the dolls were done in India Ink.
Her dolls also have accurate highly detailed skin and fur clothing. Washington dolls also carry her trademark accessories. Women carried a birch bark basket and a wooden berry scoop. The men carried a bow and arrow and a sheathed knife.
The dolls we are selling both measure about 12" tall. The woman carries the traditional accessories and has a baby tucked in her hood. She has real grey hair and India ink facial details including tattoos on her chin. A reddish hide belt ties at her waist and her parka is accented with red felt and white fur. Her boots are fur and suede. The man also carries the traditional bow and arrow, the arrow tip is broken. He has India Ink features and dark fur hair. He also carries a fur bag on his back. His parka is accented with a strip of brown and white alternate fur squares. His boots are fur and suede.
Both dolls are in very good condition with the only evident flaw being the missing arrow tip. These would make a great addition to your collection.
