Fantastic 1830's Pre Civil War "english Ivy" Antique Quilt For Sale
Fantastic 1830's PRE CIVIL WAR "English Ivy" Antique Quilt
The Patchwork Quilt
There was a wind in the night-a little hurried sigh: And in the morning someone moved along the trees, Tall, with hair that blew from clouds to earth. And on her arm there hung a basket, Deep, and wide, and ancient, waiting to be filled. There came a thought of mists and night-frosts; Of chilly waters creeping through grass unheralded; Of footprints leading home. The leaves tossed sleepily and fell, And as they fell she gathered them into her basket, And in a shaft of amber-tinted light, She set herself to make a coverlet, patch by patch- Green leaves, gold leaves, tawny brown, and scarlet- To spread across the countryside and keep it warm. Never was seen so fine a patchwork quilt As Autumn stitched that day.
I can't remember when I've ever seen a quilt this old in this condition! It was made in the 1830's (not 1930's), prior to the Civil War ~ made with 100% cottonwith an overdyed green (moss green with tiny yellow dots)& two cinnamon pink prints... all pieced completely by hand to a near white backing made from old sugar bags. The pattern is called English Ivy; and this quilt is completely filled with 56 English Ivy blocks, each 8" block surrounded by 3 rows of sashing, also pieced by hand. This lovely quilt measures 79" x 66" which is a proper measurement for the time.So much piecing went into the making of this quilt: Each block consists of 12 long rectangular pieces, the 1/4" narrow stem, 5 squares, 4 large triangles, 2 medium-sized triangles, and 20 small triangles! It has a medium weight batting with cotton seeds present.
It's in extremely good condition, especially given it's age, over 180 years old. I found only 1 old pin point-sized stain. The binding has frayed in the 2 short ends of the quilt, probably from switching ends on the bed. You will also find just a few wear spots; and I've pictured each one of them for you. It is nicely quilted with 8 spi. Every rectangle & small triangle has been quilted around the inside in like shape. The large triangles were quilted in narrow diagonal lines while the squares were quilted in a tiny 1/2" grid design. The medium sized triangles were quilted around the inside twice.
This is an exceptional quilt with very little wear ~ the colors are still nice & vibrant, and the fabric is still sturdy. Don't pass this one by!

About Me: It all started when I was a little girl.... Gramma gave Mom a piece of Flow Blue that had been passed down in our family, then she would pass it on to me. Gramma knitted, crocheted, & quilted but being a "lefty", I could never get the hang of knitting or crocheting so I learned to quilt & applique. My love of quilts & antiques comes honestly I guess. Iama "collectaholic"so I've had to set new rules for myself... "If I buy one more quilt, one has to be sold". There's just not enough room anymore! Several years ago I decided to leave a 25 year career in Human Resources Management & do something for myself... spend more time with family & friends, garden when this Ohio weather allows, & hunt for quilts, vintage clothing & hats, & other antiques.
