Fenian Tunic Buttons, Ira ' Irish Republican Army' 1866/67 For Sale
For sale three very scarce Fenian IRA Tunic Buttons in brass with gilt finish circa 1866/1867 displayed on a period paper card with description of the rank associated with the buttons . These buttons have been in my collection for 40 years and in that time I have never cleaned them and they remain as found with no wear only a little tarnish to one of the buttons, which can be cleaned off if so desired. Point of interest: Many of the Fenian soldiers at this time appear to have been well equipped and properly uniformed with a Green Jacket, gold edging to the collar & along the edges. Most striking part of the jacket were the six brass buttons, with a gilt finish inscribed 'IRA', surrounded by shamrocks, the first time that we see the use of the term Irish Republican Army. These buttons for sale are the very same, domed shaped , inscribed IRA with shamrock surround. On the reverse of the buttons, two have been inscribed 'Extra Quality' and all have the star symbols associated with the Scovill Mfg Co who incidentally made buttons for the Union during the Civil War.
