Fine, Genuine And Rare18th Century Italian Violin-no Reserve For SaleI am very excited to offer this genuine 18th century antique Italian violin
to the highest buyer with .
The violin bears the spurious label of Gasparo da Salo of Brescia.
This violin is not by Gasparo da violin is a consignment from a major Boston area musical instrument collector. Some of the best violins I sell here on are consigned by this same collector, particularly some of the finest Boston School violins in existence. This violin was purchased by my consignor in the early 1990s from Boston area estate sale. The violin came from the shop of a Boston violin dealer who had closed many years earlier, and this estate included several instruments from that dealer's inventory. After some research, it was decided that the original maker of this instrument would be nearly impossible to determine. However, it is possible to speculate as to its origin. While I am not an expert in 18th century Italian violins, my consignor is quite expert, has a significant library of violin reference books and several of his expert colleagues gave their opinions on this violin as well. They were able to determine, and I will guarantee the following:
It is certainly from the 18th century and also positively made in Italy. It was made by a maker strongly influenced by the work of Lorenzo Storioni and that is particularly evident in the unique scroll and model. The back is made from excellent Brescian maple in two pieces and old growth, fine-grained spruce for the top. The back matches the ribs and scroll and shows several knots and inclusions. The scroll is grafted onto a modern neck and the pegbox is bushed. The violin measures 14 1/8 inches or 359mm.The violin has had many repairs over the past two centuries. The are many repaired cracks on the top and the repairs include an inlaid sound post patch. I have inspected inside the violin with a mirror and observed that many, if not all of the cracks have been cleated from the inside as have both the back and top center seams. The back is in very good condition with no apparent cracks or repairs other than two small inlaid patches bisecting an inclusion at the bottom of the bass bout. This repair appears to have been done when the violin was made and before it had the purfling inlaid or been varnished.
The violin has been thoroughly checked out and repaired as needed by a professional luthier with nearly 50 years of experience. The seams were all checked and glued as needed, all old repairs inspected and open cracks repaired. The set-up is fresh with an excellent newly carved bridge, new soundpost, new ebony pegs, a vintage, high grade ebony tail piece, and new Thamastik Dominant strings with a Jargar e-string. Everything is solid and stable and the violin is ready to play. The tone is beautiful, warm and sweet. It is well-rounded and mature, and demonstrates as well as any violin I have heard, that the sound of a good violin is nearest the human voice of any instrument. It has a rich and creamy depth as well as a clean and pure tone. This is an instrument that grows with the player rewarding expression and experimentation with pleasant surprises and new layers to explore. It is a very sophisticated, elegant and complex tone. Over time, its nuances and subtleties are discovered and secrets revealed, and the real quality of the violin is uncovered. The tone is smooth and silky, more warm than bright, but with brilliance and plenty of penetrating power as soon as a little pressure is applied to the bow. This is a fine old concert violin, with the range, flexibility, projection and quality tone one would expect. class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:center" align="center">The starting offer is $49 and there is !
