Fine Antique Persian Qajar Solid Silver & 'faux' Ivory Cigarette Case; C 1890 For Sale
Very Fine and Rare Persian Solid Silver and 'faux' Ivory Cigarette Case.
Beautiful early piece, it will date to the Qajar Dynasty, c1890. For flavour, I have added a photo of the then Shah of Persia Naser al-Din Qajar.
The case features a very finely hand painted 'faux' ivory panel to the front. This could predate the case itself. The panel depicts two Persian figures. One may be a shepherd and he stands besides his flock. The seated figure appears more regal. Often these ivories relate to Persian poetry. An expert could shed more light. There are buildings to the background. Rich gilding is used to accentuate parts of the picture such as domes of mosques and the embroidery adorning the clothes. There are hairlines throughout the 'faux' ivory and minor losses.
Nevertheless this is a quality piece and in all other respects the case remains in very good original condition, even retaining its original elastic to hold cigarettes.
The solid silver is extreemly finely hand chased throughout. The front panel is framed by 14 beautiful birds amongst rich flora. The back of the case is equally impressive. It depicts deer and a wild goat within an elaborately framed and imaginative cartouche.
There are no hallmarks and in these earlier pieces it seems fairly common for the maker not to stamp his signature. Perhaps people were more modest. I guarantee that it is solid silver to at least the Persian silver standard of 84%.
Beautifully proportioned at 90mm x 72mm, it weighs an impressive 125g or 4.4oz.
Very Fine Antique Persian Solid Silver treasure and a rare and interesting aspect of Islamic art which wouldn't look out of place in a museum.
