Postal scales were introduced in the mid 19th Century after Rowland Hill (the founder of the postage stamp) suggested that letters should be charged by weight rather than number of pages. After this, most wealthy homes had their own set on the master's desk!
This sale is for afine set of vintage brass postal scales distributed by the renowned Birmingham based company John Heath. This is a very neat set with in superb condition.This beautiful set wouldmake a wonderful talking point to any room. The scales have weights from 8ox to 1/2 oz, and postage rates on the letter plate dating them to c. 1887
The scales measure 9.5" by 5" by4” high.
