Fine Victorian ornamental Brass Cash Tin Spices Casket Jewellery Box 1800s
Words almost fail me here (Doesn’t happen often!) How to describe this beautiful and highly unusual metal box!? Richly ornamented and beautifully detailed with very fine open worked corner decoration and further fine engraved work throughout. The designs are much like the fittings found to Mid Victorian English wooden boxes of quality- however these are unusually- upon a brass box as shown? There’s certainly something of an Eastern, Near Asian, perhaps Indian feel to the work also- the flavour is to my eye, somewhat Moorish, Islamic? A lift out inner tray with pierced open worked flip lids is certainly a Middle Eastern/Indian trait seen to some spice boxes etc?
Wherever it’s from it is clearly a very old find- perhaps ca early 1800s? As such some wear is to be expected and tolerated. One of the soldered tabs that serves to secure the hinges is loose (an easy repair) one this same side a sliding semi circular stop that usually keeps the lid upright when open is also detached at one end, just needs a spot of solder. The lock is also intact as shown, but no key. Surface bumps and wear and a beautiful unpolished aged patina as shown
With the minimum of work required this would be a sensational, evocative and unusual trinket of jewellery box full of charm and wonderfully decorative!
