Approximate size 9.8 x 7.5 inches (24.9 x 19 cm). Printed by Turnbull & Spears, Edinburgh. The illustrations in this rare book of fairy tales are by the English artist Florence Mary Anderson (1874-1930).In common with illustrators such as Ida Rentoul Outhwaite and Margaret Tarrant, Florence Anderson’s most sought-after work is in the fairy genre, and her best books (including The Password to Fairyland, The Dream-Pedlar, The Travelling Companions and The Black Princess, among others) date from the decade and a half following the start of the First World War. She was strongly influenced by artists such as Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Charles Robinson, Kay Nielsen, Maxfield Parrish and Jessie M. King, some of these influences being visible in Adventures in Magic Land.Published by Harrap in 1917, during World War One, Adventures in Magic Land is one of Florence Anderson’s scarcest titles. A second volume of similar stories was published in 1919, also with four colour and four b/w plates. All the stories and line drawings from these two volumes – but only one of the eight colour plates – were brought together by Coker, in their much inferior reissue of the 1930s.I can locate no other copy of the original Harrap edition currently for sale online.Contents include: Adventures in Magic Land, Little Lobby Tab, The Magic Christmas Ship, A Most Surprising Party, The Magic Beads, The Wonderful Star, The Blue Sweets, and The Magic Gloves (in three Adventures).Condition Book well used, but complete and intact.
