Additional Information: This wonderfully half calabash is decorated with a combination of natural elements such as the various shaped seashells and with different colored glass beads that could be small 19th century beads and early 20th century plastic. Colorful plastic disks were stacked as part of the decoration or served as dividers for beads. This lid is all placed upon a half of a gourd that has numerous strings threaded into it with all of the decorative elements tied and knotted at their ends to create a dome of color. The whole container would be a gourd split in half, a half would be used as the bowl and the other half as a lid. Such containers were used to keep valuable items, mostly cosmetics. This beaded lid would be a decorative and colorful centrepiece for a collection of beads or for interior design.
Examples of a full cosmetic box with lid is published in Roy Sieber AFRICAN FURNITURE & HOUSEHOLD OBJECTS, p. 211. As on the example in Roy Sieber, this one may certainly be a lid of a cosmetic box made from a half of a calabash.

For these reasons, our shipping and handling charges may be more than the price of postage.
International Shipping: We ship dozens of international orders each week, to customers on every continent except Antarctica! The shipping charges included in our listings are for U.S. orders. Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to offerding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up -- do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. And please do not ask us to mark merchandise values below the actual value or mark items as "gifts"--U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.
