Framed Steel Plate Engraving Print Of Abraham Lincoln William E. Marshall Nice For Sale
Up for offer is a framed steel plate engraving of Abraham Lincoln. According to my research, the bust length image of Lincoln was painted and engraved by William E. Marshall in 1866, a year after Lincoln's death, using portraits of the President as his guide."As soon as it was issued, this print was accepted as the finest portrait ever done of Lincoln, and in fact was claimed by a number of critics to be one of the finest engravings ever produced. Copies of the print were sent to many who knew Lincoln, and their reaction was uniformly enthusiastic. Amongst some who had high praise for the print were Robert Todd Lincoln, Gustave Dore, Edwin Stanton and Charles Sumner. Frederick Douglass even had the print on display in his home.As fine an example of American portraiture in print as one can find".
The actual engraving measures 20 15/16 inches long by 15 13/16 inches wide. It is encased behind glassinacarved wooden frame that is painted in a silverish gold. The frame measures 32 3/4 inches long by 27 1/4 inches wide.I purchased this print at an estate sale anumber of years agoand it has hung in my family room since that time. The only issue I can find with this print is that it has become a little wavy behind the glass and may need to be stretched. The only reason I am selling it is because my wife and I are downsizing for retirement. It is truly a beautiful work of art that you will be proud to own. (Since I am not an authority on this engraving, I cannot guarantee that my print was created in 1866).
