Replying to an autograph with a witty, handwritten poem, the signature being the final rhyme!
Autograph Poem signed: "Francis Lynde?" 1 page, 5x8. Chattanooga, Tennessee, 1913 March 30. On personal letterhead to Mr. H. G. Jacobs. In full: "My autograph, Is that a laugh/Comes echoing down the aisles of Time/As Youth and Age, in turning page/Have happened upon this bit of rhyme./'What pains they had, those oldsters sad' -/Says youth, 'these names to search and find!/But tell me true, pray tell me who/the dickens was this/Francis Lynde?" Novelist and short story writer Francis Lynde (1856-1930) wrote such popular novels as The Taming of Red Butte and The Grafters. Two of his stories, Stranded in Arkady and The Real Man, were made into silent films. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
