Opulent painting of light and absence. Warm light fills this tightly cropped bedroom. The delicately painted blue silken curtains emit their blue-violet shadows of pattern across the untouched bedspread. Reminiscent of Pierre Bonnard.

McCarthy studied at the Philadelphia College of Art, Barnes Foundation, Grand Chaumiere (Paris, France), and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.Francis McCarthy was an instructor of adults and children at the Fleisher Art Memorial for fifty-one years from 1953 onward and continued to teach drawing and painting in Fleisher\'s evening program until his health began to fail just prior to the start of the Fall 2004 semester. His work is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the National Gallery, Washington, DC; the Barnes Foundation, and others.
Signed at upper left.Watercolor on prepared paper. Under glass. Original Modernist frame with linen matte. Gallery Label on back, along with the words \"Friends NEIG (Neighborhood) Guild\". Albert Barnes met Francis McCarthy at the Guild in the 1940\'s, which was the beginning of their artist/patron relationship. Excellent vintage condition.Measures 19\" x 14.5\" in frame. Painting is 14.5\" x 10.5\".
