Frank Betz And Co. Vintage Surgeon's Kit 1920s, Complete With Md Calling Card:
This item literally has it all.
This travel surgeon's kit was made by Frank S. Betz and Company. "Betzco" was primarily active in the 1920s- 1930s, and they were providers of high-quality medical equipment with a broad range of products in their catalog.
This kit has been very well-preserved, despite some minor wear and abrasions to the leather. When closed, the kit measure 5.75" x 2.25" x 1", and it opens to a full length of 6.5".
The top flap of the kit bears a beautiful red and metallic gold Frank Betz label, and all tools are still within. While examining this piece, I discovered another lovely touch- a calling card from the original owner- Henry D. Gilmer, M.D. of Hagerstown, MD. A cursory search confirmed that he was active in Hagerstown during the early 1900s to mid-century. He clearly was very meticulous about the tools of his trade, thankfully.
The leather of this kit is a very dark brown that leans toward burgundy, and all tools are shown as found. The cork strop panels are fully intact, though there is some tearing to one of the interior closure panels. The kit wants to close by itself, which is why it is propped upon in the photos.
The snap has some natural oxidation but operates perfectly.
This item certainly has broad appeal, and I hope it enters into a proud collection of medical antiques.
