Frank Sinatra Invitational Golf Tournament 1963 Putter By Macgregor Canyon Club:
presents the following item for sale 1963 Frank Sinatra PGA Invitational Golf Tournament Putter
held at the Canyon Club in Palm Springs California - November 4, 1963On August 23, 2013 I attended the estate sale for Mozelle Seger who was accountant/secretary to Bing Crosby for 27 years. The organizers of the sale advertised there would be many items Mozelle obtained/retained from Bing Crosby’s estate. I purchased this putter but knew nothing about it. I did a some research when I got home and was shocked! Many of the websites refer to this putter as the “holy grail” of collectible golf putters with a value of $15,000. We learned the PGA sponsored the Frank Sinatra Invitational Golf Tournament held in early November 1963 at the Canyon Club in Palm Springs, California. The VIPs and/or participants received one of these copper plated Frank Sinatra putters in a type of celebrity gift basket at the Black Tie event that followed the tournament. The putter was manufactured by MacGregor (style IMG-5) and purportedly only 150 of them were made. This club has the original grip with the gold banding between the wraps. There is some exposure corrosion to the chrome finish on the shaft (see photo) and some wear to the copper coating on the mallet head. Otherwise, it is in fabulous condition. I obtained a Christmas Card written to Mozelle in 1964 from Bing and Kathryn (written in Kathryn’s hand) just to be able to provide additional provenance (card not included in sale). I do not know if Mozelle was one of the VIPs or if Bing gave this to her.
