Basil Ede, a Britishartist whose avian portraits and ornithological works are considered tobe some of the best bird works of modern time. Ede\'s success began in 1958 withhis one-man show in London, at Rowland Ward Gallery and Tryon Gallery in 1960 and \'62. In an eventsponsored by the National Audubon Society, the British Embassy and the EnglishSpeaking Union, he earned the distinction of becoming the first living artistwith a one-man show in the National Collection of Fine Arts in Washington D.C.Ede\'s first book, 1965\'s \"Birds of Town and Village\" featured 36 full-colorplates of his work, with a foreword written by Prince Philip, Duke ofEdinburgh.

In 1971 following a one-man show at the Kennedy Galleriesin New York, Ede earned commissions from both Warner and Walter Annenberg. Annenberg, serving at the time as U.S.ambassador to the Court of St. James, had Ede paint a series of EasternPennsylvanian birds for his collection. Warner commissioned a massiveundertaking, \"The Wild Birds of America,\" following a path and scopesimilar to John James Audubon\'s \"The Birds of America\" collection.The ambition was for Ede to paint 650 birds, all life-sized. He\'d completedmore than 90 watercolors before suffering a severe stroke in 1989. The\"Wild Birds of America - The Art of Basil Ede\" book came out in 1991,with 103 color reproductions, added to Ede\'s sketches and field notes.
