KIMBALL - HFSID 346860FREDERICK W. SEWARD and FREDERICK J. KIMBALL The government official and major Pennsylvania railroad industrialist signed this stock certificate that was cancelled in October of 1889 Stock Certificate Signed: "Frederick W. Seward" and “F. J. Kimball”. 11½x7¼. Dated October 26, 1889. This stock certificate concerns the Norfolk and Western Railroad Company, a business that Frederick J. Kimball (1844-1903) owned. Kimball oversaw the manufacturing of steam locomotives and expanded his railroad holdings up and down the East Coast. He also developed coalfields in Virginia and West Virginia. After purchasing the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Railroad company at sale, he combined it with Shenandoah Valley Railroad. These two lines, previously totally about 500 miles, grew to include over 1700 miles of track by the time of his death. He chose a village called Big Lick in Virginia as the key junction connecting his two railroad holdings; this village eventually became the city now known as Roanoke. Frederick William Seward (1830-1915), the son of Secretary of State and Republican Presidential aspirant William Seward, was Assistant Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson (1861-1869) and President Hayes (1877-1879). In this office he supervised the US consular service. Frederick Seward was seriously injured protecting his father from would-be assassin Lewis Powell, alias "Lewis Paine", on the night President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. (He may have saved Lincoln's life four years earlier, warning of a plot to kill the President-elect in Baltimore before his arrival in Washington). Seward, a lawyer by profession, edited and published his father's memoirs and wrote his own, published the year after his death. Two vertical folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
