Painting - 12" x - 19" x 29" DESCRIPTION:
Beautiful French Impressionist coastal landscape by listed Belgium - California artist,
Jean d'Orval (1889 - 1965).
Oil on artist's board. Modern Art Nouveau style gilt wood frame with walnut veneer liner.
Signed by the artist, lower left, "Jean d'Orval". Undated - Circa 1920.
This painting depicts an expansive view of a sea coast, probably the coast of Brittany in France. Jean d'Orval also painted the California coast, but this work is early for the artist and was likely painted in Europe before he moved to California in 1920. The reddish low cliffs with low green foliage, the type of clouds in the sky, and the color of the water near the shore would all point to Brittany as a likely location, although there are some places on the Northern California coast that look similar near Monterey, Marin County, and Point Reyes.
The work is painted very much in a loose French Impressionist style, similar to works by Claude Monet, with loose but sure brush work and wonderful pastel colors. The paint covers the whole surface of the support and is thick with impasto in some areas. CONDITION:
Excellent condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: No paint loss to the surface. The painting has been professionally cleaned and looks great.
The frame is probably from the late 20th century and is of a high quality. It has only light wear at the corners, not very noticeable but mentioned for accuracy of description. The frame displays the painting nicely. HISTORY:
(1889 - 1965)
Jean d'Orval was born in Belgium on Sept. 5, 1889. He came to the United States when he was 30 years old after having studied painting in France, and settled in San Francisco in 1920 where he maintained a studio. D'Orval was active in the local San Francisco Bay Area art scene until his death on April 30, 1965. He also painted under the name 'Jean Buteners' and his early work is in the French Impressionist style, with later paintings in a Naive manner, similar to the French artist Henri Rousseau.
