In the late 1800s many publications were produces depicting scenes of the United States
and the world along with glimpses of art from the famous museums ofthe world..
The majority of the population did not travel and relied upon thesepublications
to see what the rest of America and the world really looked like. They became familiar with
the famous paintings in Europe\'s museums from the pictures they sawin these publications.
Photography was developed in the mid 19th century and still in its infancy,
printing processes were developed to reproduce these original photographs
in publication for the world to see what people, places and the great art masterpieces
really looked like. Some of this wonderful historical record has survived for us to study and enjoy today.
We are offering a collection of Steel Engravings which appeared in one of these publication, in 1864.

This is your opportunity to own and preserve a piece of history
This engraving is over 100 years old, it is not a modern reproduction.

Refusing to become a candidate again, he moved to the Westwith his family, accepting the lucrative position of General Superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad. After the battle of Bull Run, he was called to active service to take command at Harper\'s Ferry.General Banks was part of the campaign of General Pope at Cedar Mountain. General Banks next collected and organized an expedition destined for New Orleans, where he was to succeed General Butler in command of the Department of the Gulf, and to carry on a new series of military operations in Mississippi, Western Louisiana, and Texas. He was able to cut off the rebel supplies sent to Port Hudson, where he now turned his attention. Under his command, This garrison surrendered on July 8th, a few days after Vicksburg fell. This accomplished one of the prime objectives of the expedition, the long desired reopening of the navigation of the Mississippi
Engraving
An engraving is an intaglio process of printing, where the design to be produced is cut
below the surface of the plate (made of steel, copper or wood), and the incised lines are
filled with ink that is then transferred to paper.
Our U. S. currency is a very good example of the engraving process.
