Genuine Confederate Csa Patriotic Cover Envelope Nr For Sale
GENUINE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVER
This "" sale is for an original Confederate patriotic cover in used condition. This coverwas made from thelower gradecoarse brown paper available in the South atthat time. It features two (2) mounted dragoons with swords drawnalong with averse that would be consideredcompletely unacceptable in today's world. Itwas manufactured and printed by W. & J. Bonitz, Goldsboro, N.C. The coverhas a circular date stamp cancellation indicating "PETERSBURG JULY 22." I must suppose this is Petersburg, Va., perhapssent by a soldier in the trenches defending the city.This cover is approximately 3 1/8" wide, and 5 5/16" long. Itis neatly slit open at the right front end, and missing approximately half the back flap on the left side.I believe that missing back flap piece was used to replace a portionof the upper frontright corner (under cancel stamp) where a stamp was probably (foolishly) removed.With a magnifying glass, you can see where the pieces were fitted together perfectly.There are old album hinges on the backintended to holdthe restored cornerin place. Using an exact ink match,an incredibly goodrestorer then drew-in the missing portion of the cancel stamp. Anamazingly professional job, but not original to the cover.
