George & Martha Washington Ormolu Ornate Ashtray With Porcelain Cameo For Sale
This beautiful example of ormolu and painted ceramic is enhanced with the detailed cameo of a depiction of George and Martha Washington sitting together looking at a book, opened on Martha's lap. George Washington's portrait, set in a ring of gold and further outlined by gold decoration and a rich blue rim, is edged with gold, filigreed ormolu metal. There is, in addition, an ornate and delicate arm set on the edge, on which a cigarette could be perched. The piece measures 3.5" across; the cameo measures 1"H x .75"W; cigarette rest measures 1-1/8"L. The ceramic part is rather thick and appears to be more a piece of pottery and not fine china. As there is no signature, I am unable to determine the age of this piece. It is from the estate of a career naval officer who served in World War II and who was stationed in Italy for some years before returning to the US. The estate included many fine antiques, many of which were gathered from Italy and other European countries, though other items included family heirlooms passed along from earlier generations. I have fully searched the internet at all sites I know of and could not find one other piece that even slightly resembled this one!
