CHARMING PAIR ANTIQUE SILK WORK EMBROIDERY PICTURES silkwork stumpwork shepherd & shepherdess Georgian
A delightful pair of antique silkwork pictures, which tell a story. In the first picture the shepherd is carving the name Elisa on a tree whilst, she is looking on in the background. The next picture shows the shepherd down on one knee proposing to Elisa. If you look carefully you will see the pictures are full of symbolism, the dog for instance standing for loyalty, the small nest of birds the shepherd is holding in the second picture representing his wish to have a family with Elisa.
A very charming pair of pictures which are very old, I estimate 1780 era ?
Condition:- The pictures are showing lots of signs of age. As you can see there is discolouration and fading to the embroidery and silk. There are also tears where the silk fabric has shrank away from the stretcher. Somebody has stuck a few plasters to the back to help repair it ! I think these pictures need a lot of looking after due to their very fragile condition. The silk ground is easy to damage, as I found when I accidently put my finger through the bottom corner of one. However the needlework skills and charm they display is, in my opinion, outstanding. I will make sure they are very well packed and protected for shipping.
