GERARDO LOPEZ VTG TAXCO MEXICO MEXICAN 980 STERLING SILVER REPOUSSE NECKLACE

Description

This is an EXTRAORDINARY sterling silver repousse necklace that was hand wrought in Taxco, circa 1948 to 1950, by renowned silver maestro, GERARDO LOPEZ. According to Dr. Penny Morrill and Carole Berk in their must-have book, MEXICAN SILVER, Lopez operated a large taller and shop which was considered one of the BEST silver shops in Taxco in a mid 1950's guidebook. Maestro Lopez's pieces are always superbly made in elegant, sumptuous designs. This magnificent necklace is masterfully crafted in a dramatic and artistic motif that has a wonderful art nouveau look with its ornate frame of scrollwork and beading. I sold a similar Gerardo Lopez 980 silver repousse necklace about a month ago ~ these necklaces were made totally by hand so no two are exactly the same ~ so if you missed out on the last one, here is another chance! This necklace is made of 980 silver which is almost PURE silver and is superior to sterling silver 925.It is richly textured, regal in bearing and Mexican by design ~ it is EXQUISITELY DETAILED! It has sculptural sterling repousse links that have a lovely orchestration of feminine scroll flourishes that are accented with teeny tiny handmade silver beads and smaller scroll flourishes. Repoussage is a metal working technique in which malleable metals (such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the reverse or underside. This technique is extremely time consuming and can take an artist an entire day or several days to complete just one piece! The links are connected at the top with soldered silver jump rings which allows the necklace to lay gracefully and beautifully when worn. The clasp is a simple hook closure that is seen on much of the early Mexican jewelry ~ there is an attached safety chain. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs. This spectacular necklace is extremely well made in an elegant and sophisticated motif that will always be in vogue ~ a bold and beautiful masterpiece that is sure to bring many compliments ~ timeless art-to-wear designed and made by Taxco maestro, GERARDO LOPEZ ~ heirloom and collector quality ~ quite simply, THE BEST!!!

SIZE: Inside circumference when closed is 15-1/4" and I'm including two new 3" silver chain extenders (one is attached to the hook portion and the other is attached to the other end of the clasp and you hook the two extenders together) that may be worn in the back where it doesn't show and extends the wearable length to 18-1/4" ~ I have included photos of my assistant wearing the necklace alone and with the extension, width is 3/4", and weight is 71.8 grams.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ minor scratches due to loving wear and age ~ just about PERFECT used condition!

HALLMARKS: "LOPEZ, *980*, TAXCO, and Eagle 23 assay mark". GERARDO LOPEZ is shown on pages 95-96 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that Maestro Lopez used this particular hallmark from 1948 to 1950.

PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
