German Violin Bow H.r. Pfretzschner Antique Ebony-silver-abalone Pre-1900:
This is one of those estate sale finds that provides something very rare and cherished a path back to life and enjoyment. We purchased a nice violin (see our other listings) owned by a lady that played with the Philadelphia Philharmonic many many years ago. We have listed the violin and although I know nothing about violins the moment I had this bow in my hand I knew it was no ordinary bow. The feel, quality and expertise in this one small item was obvious the moment I held it.
We have found the following information listed below online.
Herman Richard Pfretzschner was an excellent maker that went to study and worked for J. B. Vuillaume in Paris. His beautiful bows are often made in the style of and display the influences of F. N. Voirin. There is plenty of additional information available online about this craftsman.
There is one listed on right now with an appraisal of $8,500.00 which is as close to this as one could hope for. I am confident the period is the same, 1885-1890. It is marked on the frog and shaft (frog marking is lessprevalent) made in Germany and is silver, ebony and abalone with an exquisite wood of a reddish to mahogany hue. There are no signs of repair or damage whatsoever. The bow is very straight and exceptional overall appearance. Approximate measurement is 29" (73.66 cm) and the weight is approximately 56 grams (2 ounces).
This bow is truly one of a kind in amazing condition.
