Good 19c Anglo Indian Carved Ebony Pen Or Desk Box W Working Lock & Key 'nagina' For Sale
For your consideration we have here a good 19c Anglo Indian ebony pen box carved in low relief with a working lock and key. This box was produced in India in a area called Nagina during the c1860s to 70s and was most likely purchased by one of the British soldiers at the time. The skilled workers in Nagina worked almost exclusively in Ebony making boxes, picture frames and other various containers to hold objects or correspondence in, but when ebony would become hard to get at times the craftsman would carve blackwood and stain it to resemble ebony but this box is most certainly ebony by the way that when one buffs the surface with a cotton cloth the surfaces respond very well and shine wonderfully and leaves a black residue on the cloth due to the natural oils in ebony. This long narrow box would have been used for the storage of writing utensils and pens and is decorated in the traditional carving of foliate and geometric designs in low relief over a punched or stippled background with the inner lid showing a similar design and both upper and lower edge lippings have a central line of inlaid white dots. The box still has a working lock and key and is in good condition with some infilling perhaps when made and some definitely afterwards as the construction of said boxes were good but the lumber was not always cured properly which gave to shrinkage and this box does show a little shrinkage just under the lid noticeable mainly on the backside but all in all for a well used box it is in good condition. Size: Length 10-1/4" x Depth 2-3/4" x Height 2-1/4". A great box for the collector.
