Good 19c Chinese Export Sandalwood Brise Fan W Silk Tassel & Double Side Carving For SaleOffered here is a very good 19c Chinese export sandalwood brise fan with a silk tassel carved equally to both sides. This fan was produced in Canton, China during the 'Old China Trade' era around the c1860s to c1880s for export to the West. This is a larger than normal fan being 10-1/2" long and over 18" wide when fully opened containing (2) deeply carved thick guard sticks along with (17) thinner and more shallow carved inner sticks for a total of (19) sticks. There is a brass swing arm to the bottom with a brass rod or rivet holding the sticks together with mop washers on both ends with a fresh royal blue silk ribbon. When fully opened the scene runs from stick to stick depicting many figures performing leisurely activities and in conversation sitting, walking and carrying objects amoungst outdoor and garden settings surrounded by plants, flowers, rockery and garden seats as well as tables, fences and stone covered bridges along with trees, buildings and various The guard sticks are carved in extremely deep relief with more of the same scenes as the interior but due to the type carving of back and undercutting it gives the overall look a 3D appearance. The condition overall is excellent taking on a lovely deepcaramelcolor with a great surface patina to the guard sticks with the only flaw I could see is there is one stick which is the last inner stick to the far right in the first photo that has had a old split repaired in the top finial and two tiny pieces of wood re-attatched but not very noticeable at all. Sizes: Length 10-1/2" x Width 18" (when fully opened) x Width of each stick to top of finial 1-1/4". Here is a superbly crafted sandalwood brise fan for the fan or Asian antique collector so offer to win this one!
