Throughout the 19th century and early 20th century French jewellers posted items of value to their customers in these wonderful little pine chests secured with red wax seals and twine.This box was posted by the famous Paris jewellers MAUBOUSSIN who opened their doors in Paris in 1827. This divine timeworn confection is addressed to a Madame Duguey in Orne and has a delicieux old sepia ink written label. The value of her item was Cinq Cent Francs ( 500 francs) so I wonder what lay inside?!!Each side still has its red wax seal intact with letters impressed into the wax.The base has an old watermarked label with 2 postage stamps still attached. The remains of the old wax twine are crossed over too.The box has metal hinges and a small closing hook.The box measures:6" x 4" x 2.5"(15cms x 10cms x 6.5cms)A charming old postage box full of faded grandeur.
