FOR sale TODAY I AM DELIGHTED TO OFFER THIS BEAUTIFUL AND FINELY CARVED VICTORIAN 9 CARAT GOLD AND SHELL CAMEO, DEPICTING EOS AND NYX WHO ARE THE GODDESS'S OF NIGHT AND DAY IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO DAMAGE OR REPAIRS, NO CRACKS ON THE CAMEO, AND JUST A VERY SMALL NATURAL HAIRLINE STRESS MARK WHICH IS NOT UNCOMMON ON THESE SHELL CAMEOS, AND ONLY MENTIONING FOR ACCURACY. THESE CAMEOS WERE USUALLY CARVED IN ITALY AND THEN BROUGHT INTO THE U.K. TO BE FRAMED. THE DETAIL ON THIS ONE IS QUITE LOVELY AND FINE AND IT IS BEAUTIFULLY CARVED. EOS, WHO IS THE GODDESS OF THE DAY OR OF DAWN, IS LOOKING UP TOWARDS THE SKY TO GREED THE NEW DAY, HAVING HER HAIR TIED UP WITH A RIBBON AND DIADEM AND FLOWERS ON THE TOP OF HER HEAD, AND NYX THE GODDESS OF NIGHT IN THE BACKGROUND, WITH HER HEAD TILTED DOWN WITH EYES SHUT AND SHE HAS A VEIL AROUND HER HEAD. THERE IS ALSO A CRESCENT MOON AND STARS ABOVE HER. SHE WAS ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST CREATED GODS AND WAS ALSO RESPECTED AND FEARED BY ZEUS..AS MYTH HAS IT! AT THE VERY FOREGROUND THERE IS A BIRD OF PRAY THAT LOOKS LIKE AN EAGLE AND WITH ITS WINGS FULLY STRETCHED, AND IF I RECALL RIGHTLY, I THINK THIS MIGHT BE ZEUS IN METAMORPHIC FORM AND GUARDING THE TWO, BUT NOT EXACTLY SURE. THE EAGLE IS RESTING ON WHAT LOOKS LIKE CLOUDS OF SOME SORT. MOST TIMES ON THIS THEMED CAMEO, THE BIRD IS A DOVE, SO UNUSUAL I THINK TO HAVE AN EAGLE OR BIRD OF PRAY, AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT IT COULD BE ZEUS, BUT AGAIN NOT EXACTLY SURE. THE FRAME AND BEZEL HAVE BEEN TESTED BY A JEWELLER FRIEND AND ARE AT LEAST 9 CARAT GOLD AND THERE IS A SAFETY CHAIN AND PIN WITH IT WHICH IS NOT GOLD BUT GOLD IN COLOR, AND IT IS ATTACHED TO A RING AT THE TOP, AND ALSO A C AND T CLASP WHICH IS NOT GOLD. SO IT COULD BE WORN AS A BROOCH OR A PENDANT. YOU SEE A LOT OF CAMEOS ON THE NET, BUT MOSTLY THEY ARE NOT ANTIQUE AND THEY ARE VERY CRUDELY DONE AND CHEAP LOOKING, BUT THIS IS A REALLY LOVELY ANTIQUE ONE, FINELY CARVED WITH VERY GOOD DETAIL,FROM THE FLOWERS AND HAIR ON THE HEAD TO THE FEATHERS ON THE EAGLES WINGS. My apologies but i forgot to include the measurements. It is 5.5 centimeters or 2 and 1/8 of an inch high from frame to frame, 4.5 centimeters or 1 and 3/4 inch for actual carved shell. Width is 4.5 centimeters (1 6/8 of an inch) including frame and 3.5 centimeters (1 3/8 of an inch) excluding. The thickness of it at the thickest highest relief point, which is where the eagle is, is 1 centimeter (3/8 of an inch). It weighs 11.9 grams.
