triumph of a quilt, this brilliant Turkey red, yellow and green applique quilt is deeply satisfying in every respect. In excellent, unfaded condition with only the most minor imperfections, its colors are gorgeously saturated and rich. The dense hand-quilting is lush and in the borders particularly virtuoso and appealing.
And between that rarely seen block design (a spectacular collision of elements of Princess Feather and Coxcomb) and the delightful vining borders laden with tiny, twinkling Turkey Red eight-point stars, this quilt really delivers the visual fireworks!
In a private collection since the 1980's, this thrilling quilt was originally collected in Royal Center, Indiana. I date it to around the 1860's.
The quilt measures about 75 x 78 inches. The blocks range around 21 inches square, the "petals" narrow to as little as 1/4 inch and the meandering vines are a scant 1/2-inch wide with the little eight-point star blossoms measuring about 2 inches across.
The unusual hand-quilting is exquisite, with 8-9 little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The body of the piece is quilted over with the loveliest miniature fan-arcs I've come across, 6-10 concentric curves spaced just 1/4 to 3/8-inch apart. The borders have the showiest quilting, with deep-plumed, plunging feathered vines following the applique vines and sweet little double-outlined whirling Lauburu and Pontiac Star motifs appearing poised between block and border along two sides.
All handmade with fine hand-applique and neat hand-piecing.
Backing, Binding & Batting
The backing is a sturdy solid ivory with some instances of small scattered stains.
The narrow 3/8-inch straight-grain Turkey Red binding is perfect save for a tiny hole at one corner.
The batting is thin and completely even.
The quilt's condition is absolutely excellent: strong, sturdy, supple and clean with vibrant, saturated colors. It is nearly flawless and displays beautifully without any flaws serious enough to catch the eye. I have pictured all the small discolorations I find. These are: four light lines of pale brown discoloration along seams, mostly up against the border, and six clusters of very small brownish stains and marks, again almost all in the borders. Beyond these I just find the occasional very tiny little fleck on the ivory ground.

I don't make reserves public, but am always happy to tell you any privately if you email. I know this can help you decide which listings to offer on.
I generally ship USPS Priority, but always try to offer you a choice of services. There are no packing or hidden fees. I pick up any additional cost to fully insure quilts over $300. When it will save money between our locations, I use flat rate and regional rate boxes. When I can ship for less, you'll receive a Paypal refund for the difference.
I charge exact Priority shipping costs. Frequent overseas buyer often prefer to have their paid wins held for weeks or months, so a whole batch can ship at once for combined shipping savings. I just ask that you pay for each win in a timely manner. When you're done shopping, I pack the group and bill you for the combined shipping total.
I'm always happy to combine shipping and will re-invoice you with the new total if you have multiple wins in a day. If you have already paid, of course I'll refund you the savings.
I strive to ship within 24 hours of cleared payment. If you need your package by a certain date or don't want it to arrive until you return from a trip, just let me know and we'll adjust accordingly.
Live tracking is posted upon shipment, so you can follow your package's progress in under items Won/Purchased.
I accept Paypal and can accommodate other payment methods if you ask in advance. I request payment within 72 hours of your win. If something comes up and you will need up to a week, please kindly let me know within 72 hours how much extra time you'll need.
I often list in themed bursts, so I know you might find a cache of must-have quilts when a splurge isn't in the budget. I can often offer a convenient 3-month layaway plan on quilts selling for $450 and over and kindly request that you ask in advance about availability of layaway for a given quilt unless it is marked as layaway-qualified at the end of the description.
Layway terms are a 1/3 down and the balance payable in your choice of installments or a lump sum, within 90 days from the listing's closing date.
I go to great lengths to be your eyes and fingertips, to outline every flaw no matter how minor, so the only surprise that might await you is how much better a quilt is real life. Naturally, if you find I have missed something, I count on you to let me know immediately so that I may make things right.
We've tried to make these listings really full-featured so you can enlarge images as much as you like all one one page. But I do get an occasional email from someone who can't see all the dozens of images. You'll find a simple non-interactive version of every listing text-linked at the very top of the page where it says "Miss the old version..." Still having issues? Please contact me so I can try to help you! If I know what browser and operating system you're using, this will help immensely.
