James W. Nye - Autograph Letter Double Signed 05/14/1864 For Sale

Nevada's first and only Territorial Governor (and first US Senator) summons someone to come see him. Signed twice.
Autograph letter double signed: "James W. Nye", and signed again on verso, "James W. Nye,"1 page, 5x8. Parker House, 1864 May 14. To "O. H. Spence, Esq.", in full: "I have this moment arrived at the Parker House. Call round and see me. Yours truly". James Warren Nye (1815-1876), a New York lawyer, first President of New York City's Metropolitan Board of Police (1857-1860), was appointed by President Lincoln as the Governor of the newly created Territory of Nevada (1861-1864), holding that office when he wrote this letter. In December, with Nevada admitted to the Union, Spence became one of Nevada's first two US Senators, serving until 1873. Mark Twain served briefly as Senator Nye's secretary, but according to Twain in Sketches Old and New, was fired for writing flippant letters to constituents. Multiple mailing folds. Toned. Fine condition.
